Many of those programs will switch your monitor to 256 colors automatically when you start the program. But in step 3 select the Run in 640x480.
I am trying to configure a couple of older games for my child to use on her Windows XP machine. As she is only six, she is only capable of clicking on icons to launch the game. The problem is that some of the games will only run in 640x480 256 colors. There are other games that also run on the machine that require 800x600 so i can't just change the resolution to 640x480 256 colors. I tried the compatibility mode settings but they don't seem to want to change the screen resolution even though i specify it. I have tried also apply the compatibility mode settings to other executables in the game directory but with no luck. I assume the OS is current with WindowsUpdate, if not recommend that as well as ensuring that your video card and drivers are compatible with XP and updated.
