When the rest of his unit is killed, an American paratrooper in World War II Italy enlists local children to bomb a Nazi dam. During World War II, Captain Turner parachutes into Italy with other Army commandos to destroy a dam; the Germans are alerted, however, and shoot the men as they land. Seriously injured in the landing, Turner is the only survivor of his crew and is found by a band of renegade boys from a nearby town that has been destroyed by the German Army. Aldo, the leader of the gang, forces Bianca, an attractive German doctor, to give medical aid to Turner, and he recovers.
Realizing that he cannot achieve his objective alone, he enlists the boys as his commando squad. Bianca, meanwhile, is held captive, and after she tries to attack Turner with a pair of scissors in order to escape, he throws her down and rapes her. The boys are trained to use firearms, but, prior to their mission, Aldo demands that they first launch a surprise attack on a German camp to avenge the destruction of their town.
Aldo and his gang mercilessly slaughter the unprepared German soldiers, and Bianca, whose feelings for Turner have changed, also turns a gun on the Germans. With the revenge complete, Turner and his band travel to the dam and destroy it. Aldo, crazed by the killing, finds von Hecht, the local German commander, and is about to kill him when Turner intercedes and takes von Hecht prisoner. Overcome with emotion, Aldo collapses into Turner's arms.
